Goto is life | Goto Para sa Lahat

June through August in monsoon season across the central Philippines bringing heavy rains and strong winds, often developing into deadly cyclones. The seas rise up in anger and become treacherous for all who dare to cast a vessel.

Known locally as Habagat or moon season, it’s the season of hardship; flooding washes away ill-made structures, and family homes are battered to the ground by the high winds. It’s not only the destruction caused by the harsh weather that plagues the people of central Luzon and Bicol, but many people in these areas rely on farming and fishing to feed their families, yet the crops are ruined and the fishermen can’t cast their nets on the fierce seas. The thriving markets have become barren, as the seas are no place to cross for customers from the surrounding islands, Masbate, Donsol, Badian, Cagmanaba, Imacoto and local areas.

Yet Filipinos are resilient people, and through these hard times communities come together and help each other. It is times like these overseas Filipinos like myself feel proud when we see people sharing what little they have; a crowded home, a warm blanket, a bowl of rice, a friendly smile.

I’m lucky to have found my place in a new country, and that means I’ve been blessed to be able to help back home when I can.

During July (2018) my YouTube channel “Bicolanas Kitchen” and members of the local community (Brgy. Tibay) and (Bicolanas Angels) wanted to help our hometown of Pio Duran. We ran a “Goto Para Sa Lahat” with the goal of feeding a nutritious Goto of chickens feet and porridge. A cheap meal but packed with protein, calcium, collagen, and cartilage that are easily absorbed by the body. Cheap also means we can feed as many people as we can.
